Energy Resources in Lebanon

Lebanon, like many other countries, relies on a mix of fuel sources to meet its energy needs. The country's energy mix includes oil refining, gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), natural gas, electricity, and renewable energy. In this article, we'll take a closer look at each of these fuel sources and how they are used in Lebanon.

Oil Refining

Oil refining is the process of converting crude oil into various products such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. In Lebanon, there are two oil refineries, the Tripoli refinery and the Zahrani refinery. These refineries produce a significant portion of the country's fuel needs. However, due to the economic crisis in the country, these refineries have been facing significant challenges, including a shortage of raw materials and a lack of funding for maintenance and upgrades.

Gasoline and Diesel

Gasoline and diesel are the most commonly used fuels in Lebanon. These fuels are used to power cars, trucks, and buses. The country has seen an increase in demand for gasoline and diesel in recent years due to the growth of the transportation sector. However, the government has been struggling to provide enough gasoline and diesel to meet the growing demand. This has led to long lines at gas stations and rationing of fuel.

Jet Fuel

Lebanon has one international airport, the Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport. This airport serves as the main gateway to the country and sees significant traffic from both domestic and international flights. Jet fuel is used to power airplanes, and the airport relies on imported jet fuel to meet its needs.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is a flammable gas that is commonly used as a fuel for cooking and heating. In Lebanon, LPG is widely used in households that do not have access to natural gas. The country imports most of its LPG from abroad, and the price of LPG is regulated by the government.

Natural Gas

Lebanon has a significant natural gas reserve in its waters, but it has not yet been fully exploited. The government has been working on developing the necessary infrastructure to extract and transport natural gas to the country. The use of natural gas has the potential to significantly reduce the country's dependence on imported fuel and improve its energy security.

Electricity

Electricity is a crucial fuel source in Lebanon. Renewable Energy
